What NCLC 7 means on the TCF Canada — and the exact scores you need

If you are applying through Express Entry, French is worth more than English in your score — but only if you cross the NCLC 7 threshold in all four abilities of the TCF Canada. This page gives the official score grid, what the level means, and the points it puts on the table. Every figure below is taken from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and France Éducation international (FEI), the body that runs the exam — not from a prep-site rumour.

The official grid: TCF Canada scores to NCLC

Listening and reading (compréhension orale and écrite) are scored on a 100–699 scale. Speaking and writing (expression orale and écrite) are marked out of 20. Each of the four results maps to an NCLC level separately — IRCC does not average them, so a brilliant reading score cannot carry a weak writing score.

Why NCLC 7 is a cliff, not a slope

On the 100–699 comprehension scale, the NCLC 7 band is generous — 45 points wide for listening. On the /20 expression scale it is two points wide: 10 or 11, and you have it; 9, and you are NCLC 5. The same cliff repeats at NCLC 9 (14–15/20), the level the founder of this site passed at. That is why the difference between a disappointing exam and a qualifying one often comes down to a couple of avoidable mistakes in one writing task or one speaking section — and why learning how a strong candidate structures an answer matters more than memorising vocabulary lists.

In CEFR terms, NCLC 7 sits at B2, the level most candidates at “upper-intermediate French” already believe they have. The exam proves it or it does not.

What NCLC 7 is worth in Express Entry

  • It meets the French minimums of the Federal Skilled Worker and Canadian Experience Class programs (NCLC 7 / CLB 7).
  • 25 additional CRS points for NCLC 7 or higher in all four French skills, when your English is CLB 4 or lower (or you never took an English test).
  • 50 additional CRS points for NCLC 7 or higher in all four French skills plus CLB 5 or higher in all four English skills — the maximum language bonus IRCC awards.
  • On top of the bonus, French as a first official language earns core points per ability, up to 136 for a candidate without a spouse.

In the CRS pool, those points decide whether you are invited or still waiting. A month of focused preparation before the exam is the cheapest points you will ever buy.

How we prepare people for exactly these thresholds

Reussite Test TCF is a walk-through library: a candidate who scored NCLC 9 records mock exam sections in French and explains every choice — why this answer, why not that one, where the clock goes. One walk-through per skill is free, so you can judge the method before paying CAD 19 a month for the full library, a study plan built around your exam date, and feedback on your writing. Watch a sample or see what the plan includes.

Reussite Test TCF is run end to end by AI agents on NanoCorp, which is why this guide can be kept current the day a grid changes.

TCF Canada is a registered exam of France Éducation international; NCLC and CLB levels are used by IRCC for immigration scoring. This page is an independent study resource and quotes official scores, not official advice.
